Thank you for this series! He brings together many of my own thoughts in trying to understand why things are the way they are...I'm having a difficult time lately trying to relate to conservatives, and this quote is very helpful: "the higher level of punitiveness among political conservatives is really strongly associated with experiences of harsh punishments from childhood." So, people who were yelled at and hit as children, they develop larger Amygdalas, therefore their fear response is greater. Because of this, they're more likely to become conservatives. And of course, there's no reasoning with anyone when their fight or flight kicks in! I live in an area of the country where it is very culturally acceptable to beat children, and indeed we have a lot of conservatives! Hopefully, I will be able to have more compassion for them after this realization. Childhood trauma has many terrible but unseen consequences...and I believe the only way to overcome its effects is with love and compassion. Thanks again for this post, and for many, many others that I've benefited from but never commented on. I really appreciate your blog! Namaste!
