Seth Lerer, the dean of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego, presents how language, the written word and the recognition of the passage of time have led to the modern conception of self and the individual in this series exploring what it means to be human. Lerer's lecture is part of the "To Be Human" series sponsored by the Making of the Modern World program at Eleanor Roosevelt College at UC San Diego.
